Venice

This year we went to Venice and we didn't know we would book a room at a wonderful hotel at the Grand Canal that the historic regatta was going to be held. It is arguably one of the most important events in Venice dating back to the second half of the 13th century.

Regatta
After arriving at the airport we took a water taxi to our hotel, the Sina Centurion Palace, just in time to watch the parade with a glass of sparkling wine from our private balcony. It was unreal. The palace is a architectural gem with 20 feet tall ceilings and we felt like kings. It's located right next to the Basilica Di Santa Maria della Salute.

We were lucky enough to see Venice from it's best side, colorful and romantic.

Grand Canal
After getting "lost" in the alleys of Venice, we always were rewarded with a delicious dinner like one of my favorites, fish risotto.

We also visited Burano, which is a smaller island with very picturesque canals and it offers a more relaxed atmosphere. The wheel of life seems to turn a lot slower here than in Venice or Murano.

See you next time!

Venice

In order to really understand and enjoy the essence of Venice, I recommend staying in one of the many hotels on the island itself and yes, it is going to be more expensive, but it is so nice to walk "home" after a day of exploring the walkways, bridges and canals.

Walking along the water front at Piazza San Marco, we noticed the gondolas bobbing up an down. It ended up as a perfect image representing Venice.

One one of our strolls we found a local artist making glass art, for which the entire area is known for. We watch the artist for a while before we found a crab that he made. It's has a new home now.

Because we are very interested in any glass art we went on a day trip to Murano by using a bus ferry, like everyone else. Here we checked out the glass factories where they create their beautiful artwork. It is absolutely stunning what can be done with such a fragile material.

We continued on to Burano, by using a bus ferry, like everyone else. The houses are very colorful and it make a quiet village look upbeat and cheerful.

This was a fantastic trip to one of probably most unique destinations in the world. It's easy to see why it is on the bucket list for so many people.

Venice

From Switzerland via Austria, we drove over the Reschen pass towards Venice. As you can imagine we were so excited to park the car next to the train station and heading over the island. By this time it has gotten dark and we were looking for a place to stay. Not having a reservation was our usual approach, which can be exhilarating and sometimes very surprising. Finally, we found a nice place to stay, the Hotel Cavalletto, Only the next morning we found out that the famous Piazza San Marco is located right behind the hotel.

Very quickly, we realized that getting lost is actually a plus. Even thought the street and canal layout is confusing, one can really not get lost. There are always piazzas, towers and bridges to see that lead you to other places.

It was such a great idea to come here and experience a true Italian icon.
